Designed by ATELIER Oficina de Arquitectura and curated by Valentina Díaz, the project stands out as a critical case study in how contemporary institutional architecture can successfully navigate the delicate balance between preserving historical identity and meeting the expansive programmatic needs of a modern university.

Photographed by Aruma Sandoval, the newly completed campus addresses a complex urban and architectural challenge: scaling up a design typologically rooted in small-scale colonial architecture to accommodate a massive educational institution. In a historic city where urban regulations and visual continuity are paramount, the architects faced the task of creating a structure that feels both monumental enough to serve as a university and intimate enough to respect the architectural vernacular of Antigua Guatemala.

According to the design team at ATELIER Oficina de Arquitectura, the primary hurdle in the planning and execution phases was figuring out how to adapt a traditional, domestic-scale colonial layout into a large-scale complex without losing the essence of the surrounding context. Early in the design process, the architects recognized that simply replicating historical facades would be an inadequate response. A superficial copy of colonial elements would fail to address the complex, diverse, and modern spatial requirements demanded by a contemporary student body and campus life.

Instead, the design approach moved beyond mere mimicry to interpret the underlying spatial principles of colonial architecture—such as central courtyards, rhythmic arcades, colonnades, and transitional threshold spaces. By reinterpreting these elements through a contemporary lens, the architects managed to craft a building that speaks the language of its historic setting while providing the robust infrastructure necessary for higher education. The incorporation of open-air courtyards and shaded walkways not only honors traditional building typologies native to the region but also responds directly to the local climate, encouraging natural ventilation and passive cooling throughout the complex.

The project highlights an ongoing conversation in Latin American architecture regarding the integration of modern institutional facilities into UNESCO World Heritage sites and historic urban centers. Antigua Guatemala, with its distinct cobblestone streets and seismic-resistant low-rise architecture, requires a high degree of sensitivity from designers working within its boundaries. ATELIER Oficina de Arquitectura’s work on the UMG campus demonstrates that large-scale institutional architecture does not have to overpower its historic surroundings. Through careful proportioning, material selection, and respect for spatial sequencing, the campus manages to anchor itself firmly within the historic fabric of the city while offering a forward-looking educational environment for its students.

The architectural landscape of Antigua Guatemala, renowned for its rich colonial heritage, low-slung historic facades, and intricate courtyards, has welcomed a significant new addition with the completion of the Universidad Mariano Gálvez (UMG) campus.
