European Central Bank President Christine Lagarde formally informed the Governing Council and the President of the European Council António Costa today of her intention to step down from her high-profile position early next year, setting the date of her departure for 7 February 2027.

The announcement, delivered during a session of the central bank’s leadership, marks the beginning of a transition period for the institution responsible for monetary policy across the eurozone. President Lagarde, who has steered the European Central Bank through a turbulent economic landscape characterized by unprecedented inflation shocks, post-pandemic recovery efforts, and complex geopolitical tensions, will leave office before the formal conclusion of her full eight-year term, prompting the commencement of succession procedures at the highest levels of European governance.

Following the announcement, President Lagarde’s successor will be appointed by the European Council. This high-stakes nomination and selection process will strictly follow the institutional framework and guidelines outlined in Article 283 of the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union, which governs the appointment of the executive board and the presidency of the Frankfurt-based institution. The Treaty dictates that the president, along with the vice-president and the other members of the Executive Board, are appointed by common accord of the governments of the euro area member states at the level of the European Council, following consultations with the European Parliament and the Governing Council of the ECB.

Within the walls of the European Central Bank, the news was met with an immediate and emotional response from the institution’s leadership. The Governing Council, comprising the central bank governors of the euro area countries as well as the members of the ECB Executive Board, thanked President Lagarde warmly for her dedicated leadership and contributions during her tenure. In a rare and striking display of institutional appreciation, the council members gave her a long, sustained standing ovation, acknowledging the immense weight of the responsibilities she has carried since taking the helm of the central bank.

As the news reverberates through European financial markets and political capitals, attention immediately turns to the upcoming months of transition and the eventual identification of who will take over the leadership of the single currency’s guardian. The process managed by the European Council will be closely watched by international investors, economists, and policymakers alike, as the next president of the European Central Bank will inherit the ongoing task of maintaining price stability and guiding the monetary policy of the twenty countries that currently share the euro.
