Northern Trust has announced a robust financial performance for the third quarter of 2026, driven by significant growth across its core wealth management and asset servicing divisions, alongside strategic portfolio adjustments. The Chicago-based financial services group reported a net income of $642.9m for the three-month period ending September 30, 2026, marking a remarkable 40% increase compared to the $457.6m recorded during the corresponding period of the previous year.

The strong bottom-line growth translated to higher profitability for shareholders. According to the official company statement released today, diluted earnings per share reached $3.40 for the quarter, up sharply from $2.29 a year prior. This earnings expansion highlights the firm’s operational momentum and disciplined execution of its strategic priorities amidst an evolving, yet constructive, macroeconomic backdrop.

Total revenues for the quarter also demonstrated solid upward movement, increasing 13% year-on-year to reach $2.3bn. This revenue growth was supported by broad-based gains across the institution’s diverse business segments, reflecting continued client acquisition, favorable market conditions, and robust activity within its wealth management and institutional asset servicing franchises.

The third-quarter financial results included notable pre-tax gains totaling $48.7m, which translated to $36.8m on an after-tax basis. A significant portion of these gains—specifically $34m—arose from the successful disposal of the bank’s guardianship services business. The remaining $14.7m stemmed from Northern Trust’s participation in Visa’s second exchange offer, adding a beneficial non-recurring boost to the period’s financial metrics.

Asset Growth and Balance Sheet Strength

Beyond profitability, Northern Trust’s scale continued to expand significantly over the 12-month period leading up to September 2025 and through the third quarter of 2026. The Chicago-based group experienced substantial inflows and market appreciation across its core asset management and custody operations.

Total assets under management (AuM) rose 11% year-on-year to reach $1.963tn, underscoring the trust and confidence placed in the firm by both institutional and private clients globally. Concurrently, assets under custody (AuC) experienced a 9% growth rate, bringing the total to an impressive $15.8tn. These staggering figures reinforce Northern Trust’s position as a leading global custodian and asset manager, capable of safeguarding and managing wealth on a massive international scale.

Despite the significant expansion in assets and business volume, the group maintained a disciplined approach to capital management. Northern Trust’s common equity tier 1 ratio matched the prior-year level of 12.4% on a standardised basis. This robust capital adequacy not only provides a strong cushion against regulatory requirements and potential market volatility but also affords the institution significant flexibility to reward its investors.

Wealth Management Performance

The group’s wealth management segment was a key contributor to the positive financial outcome, delivering reliable fee-based revenue growth across its specialized divisions. Trust, investment, and other servicing fees within this segment rose 9% to $611.5m for the third quarter.

This increase was spearheaded by the global family office fees, which climbed 16% to $117.2m, demonstrating the firm’s strong appeal to ultra-high-net-worth individuals and complex family enterprises requiring sophisticated, multi-jurisdictional financial solutions. Meanwhile, private wealth fees experienced a steady 8% increase, reaching $494.3m, reflecting consistent organic growth and strong client retention across the bank’s domestic and international private banking networks.

Executive Commentary and Strategic Outlook

Reflecting on the quarterly performance, Northern Trust chairman and CEO Michael O’Grady emphasized the effectiveness of the firm’s overarching corporate strategy and the dedication of its workforce.

"Northern Trust delivered strong third-quarter results, demonstrating continued progress against our One Northern Trust strategy," O’Grady stated. "All three businesses delivered organic trust-fee growth, reflecting strong execution across the company. Market conditions continued to evolve but remained constructive overall. Our diversified business model positions us to perform across a range of environments."

O’Grady also highlighted the company’s commitment to returning capital to its investors while continuing to invest in long-term operational capabilities. "Our strong capital position enabled us to return more than $1.5 billion to common shareholders year to date. As we enter the final quarter of the year, we remain focused on supporting our clients, investing in growth and delivering sustainable long-term value to shareholders."

Recent Strategic Developments

The strong quarterly report follows other significant operational developments for the institution. Earlier this month, UBS reached an agreement to extend its fund administration relationship with Northern Trust. As part of this expanded arrangement, UBS will transfer its former Credit Suisse fund administration businesses in Switzerland and Luxembourg to Northern Trust, further cementing Northern Trust’s footprint and operational reach within the European fund services market.
