In a major step forward for corporate renewable energy procurement and grid reliability, Google has announced a landmark agreement with virtual power plant platform Voltus to fund a massive 1-gigawatt (GW) virtual power plant within the PJM Interconnection grid. PJM stands as the largest grid region in the United States, spanning multiple mid-Atlantic and Midwestern states, and is currently experiencing unprecedented surges in electricity demand driven largely by the rapid expansion of energy-intensive data centers.

The newly announced agreement represents a massive, tenfold expansion of the existing collaboration between the two companies. Earlier in June 2026, Google and Voltus initially joined forces on a 100-megawatt (MW) "bring your own capacity" agreement designed to test and deploy distributed energy resources. With this latest commitment, the partnership has scaled dramatically, resulting in what is now recognized as one of the largest known distributed capacity portfolios ever deployed by a major technology hyperscaler.

As hyperscalers like Google continue to expand their digital infrastructure footprints to support artificial intelligence, cloud computing, and advanced data processing, securing reliable, clean power has become an urgent operational priority. Traditional energy procurement methods, which rely heavily on large-scale centralized power plants and long interconnection queues, are increasingly struggling to keep pace with the speed of data center deployment. By investing in virtual power plants, technology firms are finding innovative ways to support the local electrical grids that power their operations without placing undue strain on local infrastructure.

Voltus CEO Dana Guernsey emphasized the dual benefits of the expanded partnership for both local communities and corporate sustainability targets. Noting the direct economic impact of the initiative, Guernsey stated that the collaboration successfully translates the rapid growth of data centers into direct economic benefits for local businesses and residential households alike. Through the partnership, the companies are proud to bring much-needed clean capacity online at a true gigawatt scale, proving that corporate growth and grid reliability can advance hand in hand.

Founded in 2016 and headquartered in San Francisco, Voltus operates an advanced virtual power plant platform that seamlessly connects distributed energy resources directly to wholesale electricity markets. The company’s technology platform is designed to deliver less expensive, more reliable, and significantly more sustainable electricity by tapping into resources that are already installed in homes and businesses.

At the heart of this model is Voltus’s signature "Bring Your Own Capacity" solution. This innovative approach harnesses the latent, often underutilized energy capacity found in everyday devices such as residential and commercial batteries, advanced heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) cooling systems, and flexible industrial manufacturing processes across thousands of participating locations. By aggregating these dispersed assets, Voltus can dispatch them into regional electricity markets on demand. This capability enables the broader electrical grid to extract significantly more value and performance out of existing infrastructure, avoiding the costly and time-consuming construction of new traditional power generation plants. Furthermore, it allows participating commercial and residential customers to reduce, shift, or supply power back to the grid, helping them substantially lower their overall energy costs while earning direct revenue.

The timing of this expanded partnership follows a period of significant corporate momentum for Voltus. Earlier in October 2026, the company announced that it had successfully raised $225 million in a substantial new financing round. Leadership at Voltus indicated that the newly acquired capital will be deployed strategically to fuel the continued expansion of its virtual power plant platform, with an ambitious corporate target of scaling its aggregated capacity to 20 GW by 2030.

Under the terms of the new agreement with Google, Voltus will be responsible for aggregating flexible capacity from a vast network of local devices, including smart thermostats and energy storage batteries deployed in homes and commercial properties throughout the PJM region. These decentralized assets will be grouped together into a Google-funded virtual power plant. During periods of peak demand or grid stress, these participating assets can temporarily and automatically reduce their energy consumption, providing crucial support for overall grid reliability. In exchange for their participation, customers contributing to the virtual power plant will receive direct economic benefits, including tangible electricity bill savings and direct cash payments.

Ellen Zuckerman, Head of Energy Market Development for North and South America at Google, highlighted the strategic importance of distributed energy resources in navigating the complex energy transition currently underway across the power sector. Zuckerman noted that distributed energy resources represent powerful, flexible tools for effectively managing a modern, highly reliable electrical grid while simultaneously ensuring that energy remains affordable for everyday consumers.

By expanding the initial 100 MW commitment tenfold into a 1 GW portfolio, Google is demonstrating its core corporate commitment to actively bringing its own capacity to the regional grids that sustain its operations. This proactive approach allows technology companies to move beyond passive renewable energy procurement and take an active role in maintaining the stability and resilience of the electrical systems they rely upon every day.
