Robinhood shares were down around 8% in pre-market trading on Wednesday as investors digested weaker-than-expected third-quarter earnings, despite notable growth across key segments like options trading and prediction markets. The pullback in the stock price highlights the heightened expectations Wall Street holds for the popular retail brokerage platform, even as it continues to scale its operations, attract billions in net deposits, and diversify its product ecosystem far beyond its original stock-trading roots.

For the quarter ended September 30, Robinhood reported financial results that left analysts somewhat cautious. Net income fell to $468 million, translating to 51 cents per share. This marked a decline from the $556 million, or 61 cents per share, that the company reported during the same period a year prior. However, looking at the top line, revenue demonstrated a healthy upward trajectory, representing a 12% increase compared with the $1.27 billion generated in the corresponding quarter last year.

Despite that overarching top-line gain, the crucial metric of transaction-based revenue came in at $867 million. This figure fell short of Wall Street estimates compiled by StreetAccount, which had anticipated transaction-based revenue to reach $879 million. The miss has once again placed intense focus on whether Robinhood can sustain its recent momentum across its various trading businesses while effectively reducing its historical reliance on volatile, unpredictable market activity.

Over the past several years, Robinhood has aggressively pursued a strategy of diversification as leadership attempts to expand the company’s signature brokerage application into a broader, more comprehensive financial services platform. Options trading and event contracts—frequently referred to as prediction markets—have become increasingly vital and reliable sources of transaction revenue. At the same time, the company has continued to channel significant investments into long-term growth initiatives, including wealth management services, premium subscription tiers, and other consumer-facing financial offerings designed to capture a larger share of its customers’ wallets.

A closer look at the quarterly breakdown reveals both areas of strength and areas of contraction within Robinhood’s transactional ecosystem. Overall, transaction-based revenue grew by 19% from the same period last year to reach $867 million. This growth was driven primarily by a staggering surge in event contracts revenue, which skyrocketed by more than 500% year-over-year. Additionally, options revenue experienced robust growth, climbing 31% to hit $399 million, while equities revenue rose by 41% to $121 million, demonstrating that retail investors remained active in traditional stock trading during the quarter.

Those impressive gains, however, were partially offset by a significant downturn in cryptocurrency trading activity. Cryptocurrency revenue fell by 55% compared to the previous year, dropping to $120 million. The sharp contraction in crypto revenue illustrates the ongoing challenge digital asset volatility poses to trading platforms that rely heavily on speculative retail interest during market lulls.

Discussing these dynamics with CNBC, Chief Financial Officer Shiv Verma shed light on how the platform navigated the choppy waters of the digital asset market during the quarter. Verma noted that event contracts focused on cryptocurrency movements performed exceptionally well during the period. These contracts successfully offered investors an alternative, structured way to express a directional view on crypto price movements, serving as a valuable engagement tool even amid a broader slump in underlying cryptocurrency prices and traditional spot trading volume.

Beyond trading activity and revenue metrics, Robinhood continued to demonstrate a powerful ability to attract customer assets. Net deposits on the Robinhood platform totaled $15.7 billion for the quarter. This influx of capital translates to an impressive 17% annualized growth rate, calculated on the basis of total platform assets recorded at the end of the second quarter of 2026. Looking at a longer-term horizon, net deposits over the past year totaled a massive $71 billion. This annual accumulation represents a robust 21% growth rate when compared with total platform assets measured at the end of the third quarter of 2025, underscoring the enduring appeal of the platform to retail investors seeking a centralized hub for their savings, investments, and financial management needs.
